IN DEFENSE OF FREE THOUGHT

With the impending death of the Great Discordian Overlord Robert Anton Wilson looming over the heads of those who have heard of him and the ever-marching onslaught of autocratic and fanatical furor currently sweeping the USA, the following email is both timely and not unexpected:


We live in an age of homogenization, as millions align themselves with all-consuming ideologies. As we coalesce, the edges become sharper, the divisions deeper. Religion, nationalism, politics, mass media and socioeconomic class are chief among the forces that have grown along with civilization throughout history and now have reached an overwhelming power, defining who we are as people. Too often these forces create our worldviews. We allow ourselves to be seduced by the mentality that all are one. The more fully we see ourselves as part of a social grouping, the easier it becomes to see other groups as less than human. This process has resulted in entire nations that define themselves by their predominant religion, and a world where people accept their place and society's expectations. We must respect each other as individuals, an attitude made possible when we respect ourselves as individuals.Humanity's future hinges on our evolution into a society where demographics do not predict behavior. We must not become one people with scattered malcontents.
